Last week we celebrated Catholic Education Week. This is always a time to reflect on the important purpose of Catholic education and our role in shaping the hearts and minds of the young people in our care.
Regardless of one’s own faith journey, we are a community that upholds the values of enabling full and flourishing lives as well as high standards for academic success. As staff, we are called to support and model the Catholic faith and values.
In today’s ever-changing world, where technological advancements, global challenges, and cultural shifts seem to shape our lives, it is crucial we equip our children with the right tools, including the knowledge, skills, and attitudes, to thrive in this dynamic landscape.
Not only do we build essential skills such as confidence, perseverance, resilience, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence in our students, we also aim to foster the importance of the life-giving Gospel message and the dignity of the human person. Here at Lourdes, we Communicate, Act, Look, Listen, and Think as a Lourdes Learner and a Global Citizen - we are CALLed to Think and this is done with a Catholic lens. This is the value of our Catholic education.
Congratulations
Each year for Catholic Education Week, we acknowledge the commitment of staff who have given over twenty years of service to Catholic education. In celebrating their efforts and commitment, these staff are presented with an award. Congratulations go to Danielle Leathart (Teacher Librarian) and Amanda Holzheimer (Drama Teacher) for 20 years of service and Kath Golightly (Relief Teacher) for 25 years of service. A very worthy achievement!
Loving the Arts at Lourdes
In Week 7 of term, we will celebrate the Arts. All are invited to our Twilight Art Exhibition on Tuesday 22 August from 5:00 pm. Along with the exhibited student artwork, there will be choir and drama performances. If there are any artists in our community who would like to donate and auction off one of their pieces of art for the benefit of the school, please let me know. Likewise, if there are any artists who would like to have a stall and interact with attendees, please let me know.
Parking
Please be mindful of our neighbours. Be careful not to cross or queue across driveways and do not park on footpaths in the surrounding streets. This is a highly dangerous practice and is an offense. Children are unpredictable and are not used to avoiding moving vehicles on footpaths. The safety of our children is paramount, so please drive slowly and park in appropriate areas, even if it involves a bit of a walk.
Attendance
Some school absences are unavoidable. Kids get sick, or there may be a family emergency or other important reason for missing school. But parents may not always realize how much school their child is missing. It is vital students are at school, so students are not at a disadvantage by missing out on quality teaching and learning and are able to complete assessments.
This also applies to late arrivals. Teachers use the first part of the day to settle the children for learning and ensure everyone has what they need. Repeated late comers disrupt this important routine. Not only does the child who arrives late miss out on important information, so too do other children due to the teacher having to stop and wait for any late comers to organize what other students did prior to the commencement of class. This disrupts the lesson, other students, and routines.
Your support and cooperation in ensuring your children are at school with plenty of time to prepare for the day is a common courtesy and sets students up for success.
Creating a Culture of Kindness: Be the Change
Our school is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for everyone. A positive learning experience is essential. Thus, it is our collective responsibility to create an environment that promotes kindness, empathy, and understanding.
We know that behaviour is communication. At school, we do experience positive and negative behaviours whether they be verbal or not. Negative incidents such as name calling and teasing can escalate as parties attempt to have the last word in an argument. Rumours and gossip at times cause hurt, and we do our best to address this and check all facts. However, parents and staff, have been guilty of not checking all the facts or listening to all perspectives. People, young and old, love a story. Whether or not the facts are true often does not matter as much as sharing the story with whoever will listen. This can and does cause people great harm. All of us have a responsibility not to participate in tearing down someone else’s reputation.
Bullying is an aggressive and intentional behaviour where one person seeks to harm, intimidate, or control another person who feels unable to defend themselves. It can be insidious and is always destructive. Too often it goes unreported. Far too often, teachers only hear of it after a long period of time has passed and as a result, it is very difficult to resolve the issue. Most disagreements and perceived relationship issues can be resolved if those who can make a difference are informed. It is always better to deal with issues before they go too far.
Here at OLOL, we urge students in the first instance to be resilient. Sometimes life and people are not always fair, and we get on with our life regardless. However, if a pattern develops, the next skill needed is to be assertive. To learn to say, calmly and directly, “There is no hate here mate. Stop, I don’t like that, give it a break!” If the perpetrators continue, the inappropriate behaviour needs to be reported. Please encourage your child to speak up and share their concerns.
Parents too, should reach out to teachers or the leadership team with concerns. Please do not turn to social media or one another to make accusatory comments that are detrimental to our culture and community. Everyone needs to expect respect. This is at the core of our school culture.
As members of Our Lady of Lourdes, we all have the power to create a culture of kindness and inclusion. Simple acts of kindness, understanding, and friendship can have a profound impact on someone's life. Let us all lead by example and be the change we wish to see in the world.
Thanks for reading.

Faith & Religious Education News
Last week we celebrated Catholic Education Week. The theme was “Communities of Faith, Hope and Love.” We congratulated a Long Service recipient of our staff - Danielle Leathart for her 20 years of service. We thank Danielle for the inspirational way she leads us as our school librarian and part of the Year 4 team. We also congratulate Amanda Holzheimer for 20 years and Kath Golightly for 25 years of service.

On Wednesday, Year 2 led a beautiful prayer assembly celebrating our wonderful Grandparents. We were so impressed with the wonderful attendance of about 400 grandparents on a bright and sunny day. Our Grandparents thoroughly enjoyed the prayer, visiting classrooms and morning tea. They are looking forward to returning next year to see our finished school construction.

On Friday it was the Bishop’s In-service Day. Students had a holiday, while all OLOL staff gathered at St Mary’s College to listen to our new Bishop – Bishop Ken Howell, Dr Patrick Coughlan – Director of the Toowoomba and Keynote speaker - Maeve Heaney- Lecturer from Australian Catholic University/ Theologian/singer /songwriter -
Bishop Howell shared his story and said how he looked forward to meeting the many educators across the Toowoomba Diocese. Dr Pat reminded us all to do what we do - well and what makes us feel alive!
Maeve spoke and shared songs with 1000 staff of Toowoomba and surrounds about Dialogue, Distinctiveness, Diversity and how Catholic Schools are educating for the future. Her enthusiasm for the opportunities we have to share our faith, with the children we have the privilege to teach, was inspiring.
We ended the week with the Parish thanking our school staff for their contributions towards the faith education of our children during the 9:30 am Mass on Sunday.
The 2nd meeting for children and parents involved in the preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation is on Sunday, 13th August, at 10:30 am in the OLOL Church. Parents and their children will work on the second and third topics of their booklet in rotating groups.
The 3rd preparation meeting will be on Sunday 27th August at 10:30 am.
The Sacrament of First Reconciliation is on Tuesday, 5th September at 7 pm. A short ceremony practice will be on Monday 4th August at 3:30 pm in the OLOL Church.
Any questions or queries please contact the OLOL Parish office. (07 4634 1453 Monday – Friday 9 am - 1pm) or email olol.parish@bigpond.com
The Prep to Year 3 children will celebrate the Feast Day of St Mary Mackillop with a special prayer celebration at 10 am in the OLOL Church on Tuesday, 8th August. All are welcome to join us.
As part of the liturgical year in our Catholic tradition, we have different days where someone or something special is recognised as a Feast Day.
August 8th is the day we recognise St Mary Mackillop - our first Australian saint. St Mary Mackillop saw the need to provide an education for children of poor families in 1870’s. She inspired some young women to follow her to teach these children – these women became the Sisters of St Joseph. Mary and her sisters travelled throughout the heat of the outback to some of Australia’s most remote communities. They were willing to do whatever it took to set up schools, so overlooked children could pursue an education, reach their potential and flourish. Our own Toowoomba Diocese saw the benefit Mary’s vision –the Sisters of St Joseph started schools in places like Quilpie, St George, Allora, Pittsworth, Chinchilla, Inglewood, Millmerran, Tara and St Thomas More’s in Toowoomba. Mary Mackillop Catholic College is named after St Mary Mackillop. The Sisters of St Joseph, who follow in St Mary Mackillop’s legacy continue to provide educational opportunities here in Australia and in neighbouring countries.
Let us all continue to walk in the educational footsteps of St Mary Mackillop – by being grateful for the opportunity to learn, express ourselves as well as remembering to help others. St Mary Mackillop was fierce in the face of adversity and acted when she saw injustice. So let us be fair and act when we see injustice, let us see a need and do something about it.
The Year 4-6 children will celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady – Mary, the Mother of Jesus on Tuesday 15th August with a Mass at 10 am in the OLOL Church. Again, all are welcome to join us.
The Assumption is another one of our special Feast Days. We recognise the importance of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. It is our belief that God called Mary- body and soul to take a special place in Heaven
Father Quinlan always reminds us that this day is also a day to remember the importance of our own mothers in our lives. Mary cared for Jesus, she was the person who taught and guided Jesus to be the best person he could be. Just like our own mothers do now.
We celebrate our annual Fathers’ Day Mass on Thursday 31st August at 10 am in the OLOL school hall. All Dads, Granddads, Pas and Poppys are warmly invited to attend. Please email a photo of your Dad/Granddad/Poppy/Pa with their children/grandchildren, for our Fathers’ Day powerpoint, to Mrs Moore (Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au ) one photo per family, by Wednesday 24/8/2022.
Our Crazy Sock Day is on Thursday 14th September – wear your craziest socks with your sunsafe coloured clothes and bring in a gold coin donation for Catholic Mission – a group that helps communities all over Australia and poorer areas of our world. Catholic Mission aims to empower people to help in their communities by providing education and opportunities to improve the living standards.
We are also asking for a new pair of socks – any size, which we can donate to the Base Soup Kitchen- a way to help those who are struggling in our own local community. We are endeavouring to remind our students that a Global Citizen helps those locally as well as globally.
Have a great week!
Cheers

Week 4 and 5
How exciting to see the children develop and grow not only into Lourdes Learners, but readers and writers! Fantastic!
We continue each week learning a new sound and letter name, word families and sight words – we use our knowledge of these to develop our reading and writing. Please continue to revise these at home.
We head to Cobb & Co on Thursday in Week 4 as part of our HASS unit – this will assist in our understanding of the culture of First Nations Australians. The bus and entry fee will be billed to your fees.
August is our mystery reader month! Lots of fun! You are invited to turn up at a time that suits you and read us your favourite picture book. This is a surprise!! Please don’t tell your child – we simply stop what we’re doing and listen to your story. Please avoid Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons.
On the 8th August we will celebrate Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop by attending a liturgy with Grades 1, 2 and 3.
On the 9th August, QLD Health are sending a nurse to test the vision of each Prep student IF you gave permission via the parent portal. You can still sign up by scanning the code on the classroom door. This is a free service.
Many thanks for your support, particularly reinforcing the Lourdes Way at home in regard to behaviour.
Cheers,
Melita, Liz and Loretta
Year 1
Last week, we enjoyed spending time with our Grandparents on Grandparents Day. We showed them around our classrooms, completed activities together and asked questions about their childhood memories.
In English, we have been reading Possum Magic to explore the structure of a narrative and write character descriptions for Grandma Poss and Hush. We may even get to try some of the food that made Hush visible!
In Maths, we are learning about collecting and representing data. We are lucky to have Professor Joshua Byrnes, a Health Economist from Griffith University, joining us on Friday to show us some real-life examples of data collection and how useful data can be.
On Tuesday 8th August we will celebrate Mary MacKillop feast day with a prayer liturgy at 10am in the church.
We are looking forward to our excursion to the Darling Downs Zoo next Thursday, 10th August. Students will need to arrive at school on time as we will depart on the bus at 8.45am sharp. Students are asked to wear their sports uniform on the day, and must bring a hat, water bottle and generous morning tea and lunch. We are scheduled to arrive back to school at around 2.45pm, so please aim for a 3pm school pick up to allow us time to return to the classroom before heading off.
Parent volunteers are welcome to join us, to guide a small group of students around the zoo. The cost of zoo entry for an accompanying adult is $20, to be paid at the gate. We ask volunteers to meet us at the zoo at 9.50am. Please let your child’s teacher know by Friday 4th August if you wish to come along. It should be a great day out for the children!

Year 2
Welcome to Week 4! It was wonderful to see so many grandparents and families here for Grandparents’ Day last week – the Year 2 students enjoyed interviewing their grandparents and have started to put their information together into a Book Creator presentation. Well done to all of the students on their wonderful job leading the prayer celebration.
This week, we continue to explore fractions in Maths – we have used repeated halving to find halves, quarters and eighths. We have also talked about where we find these fractions in our lives outside school – food, cooking and sports are just a few examples. In HASS, we continue to explore ways in which technology has changed over the years and we have been learning about Abraham and Sarah in Religion.
Next Thursday, we have our excursion to the Crow’s Nest Historical Museum – if there are any outstanding permission forms, please complete these as soon as possible. We look forward to a fantastic day!
Have a great week!

Maths: This week and next week, students are exploring measurement in Maths. They will be learning about length and capacity and the different tools (e.g. ruler, tape measurer, measuring jug) that are used to measure length and capacity. You can support your child’s learning by playing around with these tools at home. For example, you could measure up different objects around the house using a tape measure and order them from smallest to largest. You could also get your child to help with some baking where measuring cups/jugs are used to measure different liquids.
English: Students have enjoyed reading both fiction and non-fiction texts about different animals. They have become real investigators when identifying facts in the text and turning those facts into dot points (important skill of note-taking). We will continue to explore information reports and writing factual sentences with WOW words and Scientific words.
Science: Students have enjoyed learning about the characteristics of living things, and what living things need. We will continue to explore the external features of living things, and how animals can be grouped (e.g. mammals, insects).
Grandparent’s Day: It was wonderful to spend the morning with the children’s grandparents and special friends on Wednesday last week. Please see attached images from Grandparent’s Day.
Book Week/Reader’s Cup: Book Week is coming up in Week 7 of this Term. The theme is "Read, Grow, Inspire". You may like to start pulling out some of your children’s favourite books and talking about potential characters/costumes. Just a reminder, there is no prize for best dressed, any costume will be magical! During Week 7, students will also participate in Reader’s Cup, organised by Mrs Leathart. We have started exploring the Reader’s Cup books for this year in the classroom. The books for this year are Silly Birds by Gregg Dreise and The Marvellous Manner of Water by Philip Bunting. Feel free to read these stories with your children at home so they become experts on them for the Reader’s Cup Kahoot in Week 7.
Spare Mini Whiteboards: If students have any spare mini whiteboards at home that aren’t being used, it would be most appreciated if they could please bring them into the classroom as we can never have too many mini whiteboards! They are a fantastic tool for learning. If you don’t or would prefer to keep them to use at home that is absolutely fine.
Student Dictionary: Year 3 teachers have been discussing introducing a personal word dictionary for students to keep in their tidy trays and use during writing. The best one currently available is called “My Useful Word Book”. This dictionary would be invaluable to support students with their spelling of both high frequency words and more challenging words. If you are able, it would be amazing to please provide one for your child/ren to bring in. This is available at Brown or can also be found online at Officeworks for $6. Please see below a link. If children have a copy from previous schooling years, they are welcome to use those – a new one is not necessary. If you are unable to provide one of these dictionaries, we will print out an alternative digital version to be used so nobody misses out on the great tool for their learning.

Have a great week everyone!

Year 4
Welcome to Week 4. Hope everyone enjoyed the three-day weekend at the end of Catholic Education Week. Year 4 have had a busy couple of weeks. A couple of weeks ago we had our Pyjama Day where we saw lots of different sleepwear and students were encouraged to donate a gold coin to The Pyjama Foundation who support foster children and help improve their literacy levels.
Thank you to all the Grandparents who came to the Grandparents Assembly and joined the children in their classrooms, last Wednesday. We hope that they enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and enjoyed being able to discuss and see the children’s work. We loved having them here!
Homework began last week, and students are reminded to manage their available time at home, to ensure that it is completed by the due date, in their classroom. We hope to be moving into our new classrooms in the next couple of weeks.
On Friday, we will continue to learn our line dancing with Mrs Fisher. All students seemed to be enjoying the new specialist lessons with Mrs Simmons – Art and Italian (not at the same time!)
Year 4 students are continuing to work towards showing kindness to each other this Term. Don’t forget about Book Week in Week 7 – Read Mrs Leathart’s Library News in this newsletter, for all the details.
Have a wonderful two weeks everyone!
Suzanne, Aleisha, Jessica and Danielle
Year 5
English and HASS are proving the perfect pairing as students explore life and perspectives in the 1800s. We are working towards our historical narrative in English and are building our knowledge to complete a research task for Hass in the coming weeks.
Maths is providing the opportunity to go back to our first impact cycle for the year and apply our knowledge of factors and multiples. Multiplication and Division fact recall are at the forefront for the next few weeks. Developing quick recall and/or strategies to assist this knowledge is very important and something that needs to be practised at home, as well as school. A fun way to help consolidate and develop these skills include the Speed Skills on Maths Online.
Our adaptations unit in Science has provided an enjoyable hands-on experience to learn the importance of having thumbs. Students first timed themselves doing simple tasks with all five fingers. They then timed themselves doing those same tasks, with their thumbs restricted, and discovered that the tasks were far more difficult and took a whole lot longer. The students now have a new-found appreciation for their thumbs!

Camp Meeting
On the 15th August, we are having a camp meeting to provide parents with information about camp. The session has been scheduled for 5pm in the Year 5 classrooms to allow more parents to attend. A reminder that camp is in the second week of Term 4 on the 9th – 11th October (not that far away when you consider we are already in week 4).
Grandparents Day
Thank you to all the Grandparents and family friends who came and made last Wednesday so special for our students. It is always wonderful welcoming families into our school, so thank you for taking the time to come and join us.
Catholic School Touch and Netball
The Lourdes spirit was alive and well at the Touch and Netball Carnival last week. Special shout out to our Year 5 Competitive girls' team who made the Grand Final and narrowly missed the win with a final score of 2-1 to Mater Dei. It was wonderful to see students cheering each other on and tackling new challenges, especially for those who had not played these games before. It was evident that all students are aware of our focus on being a global citizen, cheering each other on, making friends with others from schools across the diocese and always being respectful to others. You should be very proud parents right now.
Homework
Homework now runs from Monday to Monday. Homework includes Maths Online tasks and revision, Spelling and Reading Eggspress tasks. A reminder that our classroom is open from 8am Tuesday to Friday for students to come up and complete homework tasks.
Students are encouraged to read for a minimum of 20 minutes each night. It’s great to see some students use their new knowledge they’ve gained from reading to bring in some delicious treats for their classmates. Thank you Lexi for your scrumptious gluten free rocky road cookies! We look forward to what other passions students develop from reading. Please note that Library is on a Thursday morning for all Year 5 classes.
Thank you for reading!
Jess, Emily and Amy
Year 6
This term certainly is flying by, Week 4 already! Last week was very busy with all the activities involved with celebrating Catholic Education Week, culminating in a pupil free day and an opportunity for staff across the diocese to come together, meet Bishop Howell and hear about the positives happening in Toowoomba.
Last Thursday the Year 5 and 6 students participated in the Catholic Schools Touch and Netball carnival. This was the first time that students could compete in either sport. The students displayed wonderful sportsmanship and embraced the nature of the carnival – to have fun and encourage each other. The Year 5 and 6 girls touch teams both made it to the final, with the Year 5 team losing by one point and the Year 6 team being crowned champions. Congratulations to all the teams and well done to the Year 6 girls' team. Any uniforms still to be returned need to be washed and brought back to Mrs Wigan.
Whilst week three was consumed with celebrations, students completed their lawyer paragraph in English lessons. They have been using the PREC strategy to help them with their writing. It is wonderful to see the progress the students are making with their writing. In Mathematics, the students have worked on the area of rectangles and will move into column graphs in the coming weeks. Keep practicing your multiplication facts.
It is pleasing to see the students beginning to tick off some of their individual goals in Mathematics and English as well as their personal goal. It is always very satisfying and rewarding when you strive to achieve a goal that you set for yourself. Year 6 have recently implemented a gallery which showcases many of the students' achievements, a piece of work for which they are very proud.

Visual Arts
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”
― Pablo Picasso
We are all getting very excited about “Loving the Arts at Lourdes” Tuesday 22nd August 5:00pm. Each child is busily selecting and completing works of art to display. It is very rewarding for young artists to present their art to an audience.
Students from prep to year 4 are working on an artwork based on an illustration from a shortlisted book week story.

Rangers Baseball
On Monday 31st July, the Year 1 and 2 students at OLOL participated in the Rangers Baseball Clinic at school. The students were lucky enough to have the Qld Baseball Development Officer, the President of the Rangers Baseball Club and two other Rangers players and coaches come and teach the students the skills of baseball/Tball. The students participated with enthusiasm in different games that focused on throwing, hitting, and catching throughout the clinic. If students would like to attend the come and try session for FREE for baseball, please read the flyer attached for more information as this is a wonderful sporting opportunity for all students. Thank you to Steve Metzroth for allowing the students at OLOL the opportunity to be a part of this Basball clinic and learn the skills needed to play the game.

Futsal
On Tuesday 1st August the students in Year 3 were fortunate to have a Futsal Clinic in their PE Lesson at school. The students thoroughly enjoyed learning from Chris McLeod, the SWQ Director of Futsal and participated with enthusiasm throughout the session. The highlight for the students was playing a game against one another. Thank you to Chris for sharing his wealth of knowledge and skills of futsal to the students at Our Lady of Lourdes.

Choosing Good Fit Books

Book Week Dress Up (information as per last newsletter)
Book Week Dress Up day will happen on Thursday 24th August 2023. Some reminders about choosing costumes for Book Week…
- Keep it simple. Homemade costumes are awesome but so is a store-bought costume or one you’ve borrowed from the neighbours and the one in dress up box already will work too.
- Plan early.
- Working backwards is OK – if you get stuck on a book to match your costume drop by the Library or send Mrs Leathart and email and I am sure we can find a book to match.
- Group costumes can be fun too. Think: Where is green sheep? The Day the Crayons Quit.
- No costume is wrong – movie characters, book related (school appropriate) t-shirt.
- Cannot think of a book? Perhaps your child could come as an author? They wear regular, everyday clothes.
- Pinterest is also a good source of ideas for Book Week.
- The theme this year is: READ GROW INSPIRE
