Dear Parents
How are you all coping with the constant cold and rainy days? I do take my hat off to the teaching and support staff for their efforts in supressing civil unrest in the classrooms after many days of inside time. Well done to the students as well for their co-operation during times like these. And you the parents, thank you for your ongoing persistence in the daily routine of organising your children to get to school during ex-ordinary weather events such as these…you deserve a medal!
As life gets busier and days get shorter, patience levels can be tested, especially as we approach the halfway mark of the school term. Homework seems more of a chore, getting out of bed feels like you’re attempting the school record for high jump, friendships start to fray a little and Mr. Golightly appears older and crankier!
One of the vitally important things that can subside is communication. Open communication between yourselves and your child’s teacher is paramount for a successful and enjoyable year for all parties. Individual teachers will inform families of their preferred mode of communication and times they are available to meet with you. Please feel free to contact me at any time either by email, phone call or face to face, but it is pertinent that your first point of contact is your child’s teacher as they have first-hand knowledge of your child’s progress and daily happenings in the classroom and playground.
We all must remember that everyone involved in the partnership takes responsibility for regular and clear communication. It is not solely up to the classroom teacher to ensure this occurs. If for whatever reason you have not received or cease to receive any information i.e. newsletters, student reports, class notes etc, please let us know as soon as possible so the issue can be rectified.
The teaching and support staff here at OLOL will do everything we can to help your child to do their best. Let us know if we can support you in any way. Remember, communication between home and school is vital for a happy and productive school year. Myself, Mrs. Moore (Assist. Principal Religious Education) and Ms. Murray (Assist. Principal Admin) are also more than happy to meet and discuss matters at any stage.
How to keep in touch: -
- Read the newsletter which is emailed to each family every fortnight. Please ensure the school has your current email address.
- Access the Parent Portal – please refer to previous newsletters for instructions
- Attend parent information nights & school functions.
- Establish preferred means of communication with your child’s teacher.
- Get involved in school life. Be part of the P&F Assoc., help out in the classrooms, sports training or carnivals.
Please keep in mind that like in any organization, problems arise from time to time. A school community is a complex body involving the Parish, Catholic Schools Office, School Administration, teachers and ancillary staff, visiting specialists, parent groups and students. As educators of children, we understand the concerns of parents and we ask that parents in return understand that the roles of the teacher continue to become more demanding and complex.
The education of our students is a partnership. When an issue arises, please contact the person concerned directly at the earliest opportunity and in the least formal way, i.e. a quick chat before or after school, courteous email or phone call at a reasonable time of day. I would like to emphasize two words…. courteous and reasonable.
Another important point is to keep an open mind about what you hear. We love and cherish our children, however it is wise to remember that they can sometimes embellish and misinterpret things. Checking ‘stories’ with your child’s teacher in a courteous manner will resolve any such problems, as they are the ones that will know all the facts and can give a clear explanation of both sides to the story.
Uniforms
We are aware that several uniform items are in short supply or out of stock at Hanna’s, some flexibility has been granted regarding the uniform. However, items such as navy blue stockings or long navy blue socks can be purchased elsewhere. When the girls wear the formal tunic, it must be worn with either navy blue stockings or long navy blue socks – not short socks. Similar for the boys who wear shorts as part of their winter formal uniform – long navy blue socks only. If you are unable to purchase the girls’ tunic, it is preferred they wear their summer uniform with the correct jumpers until the tunics are in stock.
Students must wear official school logo jumpers only. Parents have a choice of purchasing a fleecy or woolen pullover and the spray jacket. For colder days they can choose to wear both for extra warmth.
If you are having trouble in purchasing school jumpers or other items, please let us know and we will do our best to locate some for you.
We have a beautiful winter uniform and always receive many comments in the community about how smart the kids look. If all families follow the correct uniform code, the high standard is easily maintained.
School Photos
Just a heads up about the upcoming whole school photos on Thursday 26th May. I know it might be a stretch considering the shortage of uniform supplies, but it would be great to see everyone looking their very best on the day…even if a number of tie swapping occurs. Remember…no short socks and Year 6’s please wear your leadership badges.
Mothers’ Day Mass
Unfortunately, I was away from school last week and sadly missed the Mothers’ Day Mass and morning tea. From all reports this celebration was very well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all who were there. Full credit to the students for their exemplary behaviour and respect for the occasion and well done to Mrs. Moore and those staff who assisted in the preparation of this truly special gathering of our school community.
BBQ & Disco
A reminder about a couple of upcoming school social events. Our first whole school BBQ and disco will be held on Friday 20th May from 5:30 – 8:30pm. This is always a very popular event for the kids and a great opportunity to come together as a school community. Please note that all children need to be accompanied by an adult throughout the night. Children cannot be dropped off and picked up after the disco. I am looking forward to catching up with as many of you as possible during the night. Fingers crossed for a break in the weather next week.
Trivia Night
The other event is our annual adults only Trivia Night is on Saturday 28th May in the hall so no matter if it is rain, hail or shine, it will be on. 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. $15 per head and BYO food. There will be a bar operating throughout the night and live music after trivia. Tickets are available through Trybooking. Why not organize a table and join us for a great night of entertainment.
School Lunches
A request from the teachers for parents to double-check the amount of food that is packed for the school day. Recently, we have had an increase of students approaching staff for extra food. It may be due to the wet weather as they have longer time to eat during the breaks, so might be a good idea to pack extra. It may also help to show your kids, especially the younger ones what food is for morning tea and what is to be eaten at lunch. Thank you for your co-operation.
Athletics Carnival
Our annual athletics carnival is quickly approaching. Day 1 (Yrs.3 -6) is on Tuesday 31st May and Day 2 (9 yrs. – 12 yrs. students 800m & field events) will be held Thursday 2nd June. Both these days will be held at O’Quinn St. Oval. The Preppies to Grade 2 students will run their races and relays here at school on Friday 3rd June commencing at 9:00am Remember that the new house colour sports shirts are available for sale for $25 via Flexischools. Please refer to the P.E. section of the newsletter for all other important information regarding this year’s carnivals.
Thanks for reading….

Term Two School Fees
Term two school fees were emailed to families yesterday afternoon. If you have not received your statement, please check your junk/spam folders before contacting the school.
Fees can be paid either via BPay or Internet Banking, alternately you can come to the school office and pay via Credit Card, Eftpos or Cash.
Paying by BPay
Payment of school fees via BPay is our preferred method of payment.
If choosing to use BPay, you will find the relevant details located on the bottom right hand of your statement.
The school’s BPay Biller Code is 310417 and your family account reference will be noted underneath (as per example).
When making your payment via BPay you will also have the option to set ongoing recurring payments weekly, fortnightly or monthly if you so choose.
Paying via Internet Banking
If making payments via Internet Banking, please use your OLOXXX family code when referencing your payments and note your reference begins with 'OLO' (as in "Our Lady Of") and not 'OLzero'. By using the correct referencing, it assists with the receipting process of payments, helping to ensure your payment goes directly to your account (and not that of another family).
Should you choose this method, you will find the school’s banking details located on the bottom left of your statement and your family/household reference number located on the top left of your statement.
As with BPay, when making your payment via EFT Transfer you will also have the option to set ongoing recurring payments of weekly, fortnightly or monthly if you so choose.
If you have any questions in relation to payment of your school fees, please contact us on 4591 1200 or email accounts@ololtwb.catholic.edu.au
Sponsorship of OLOL Gotcha Awards
The Gotcha Award is presented to students who demonstrate the traits of a Lourdes Learner. These acts are witnessed by staff who nominate the student, then at our assembly, two names are drawn at random to receive the 'Gotcha'.
We have been privileged over the past few years to have this award sponsored by a previous family of the school who owned Hello Harry's Burger Bar at The Walton Stores. The recipients of the award were provided with a certificate from our sponsor along with a voucher to receive a free burger.
We are now in the process of seeking another sponsor for this award and are reaching out to the OLOL community to see if anyone would be interested. If you would like further information and/or are in a position to assist, would you please contact Hazel at the office via email accounts@ololtwb.catholic.edu.au or via phone on 4591 1200.

Developing expert learners who are confident, creative, and engaged writers is the main aim of the Writing Improvement Strategy, led by the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office. This is achieved through effective teaching. Our teachers have participated in several professional learning opportunities to gain effective teaching strategies that are designed to benefit our learners.
With the help of a positive writing environment, we are developing writing mindsets. This is where the learner sees themself as a writer, focuses on the criteria that will help them be a great writer, and seeks feedback to improve.
Not surprisingly, books provide a powerful model for writing. Our teachers have worked on developing the reading and writing connection by using published authors to inspire great writing. Recently, I have been visiting classrooms and asking students questions about what they’ve been learning and how they know they have been successful. It has been very encouraging to hear excited learners confidently share how they use words and language features in their writing, similar to the ones an author uses.
Reading and writing, however, are not just learnt in the classroom at school. You can help develop the skills of writing for your child by encouraging reading and writing away from school. Here are some tips:
- When reading, talk with your child about the words that describe a character or place.
- When reading together, talk about how the author made you all laugh or feel sad.
- Read aloud to each other. This will help build their fluency and understanding of vocabulary and language structures as well as strengthen their comprehension.
- Encourage reading and writing about topics of interest.
- Expand your child’s vocabulary by talking. Instead of asking, ‘How was your day?’ only to receive the one-word answer ‘Good.’ Ask them to ‘share a PIC’ – share something Positive (share a positive experience, highlight or success), something Interesting (share something interesting or new learning), and something Challenging (share a challenge and what strategy would help them overcome it).
- Read and discuss different types of texts both in printed and digital forms such as recipes, letters, emails, stories, advertisements, social media ads, posters, news articles etc.
- Encourage your child to write frequently. Provide different meaningful opportunities for writing, including the shopping list, sending letters and cards to friends or relatives, writing emails, keeping a diary, writing stories, or writing notes. Writing apps on the iPad such as Book Creator are beneficial too.
- Point out words in the environment around them, particularly interesting words, words within words and sounds of letters in words.
Essential for life, there are opportunities to learn and practise reading and writing each day. Purposeful support from the class teacher and the parent or carer at home will set children up for success. Together we make a difference.

Thank you for joining in our Mother’s Day activities - lovely opportunity to spend time with your child.
Back to 5 day weeks! It will be good to get back into routine. Some children have been a bit unsettled starting Term 2. Please talk about positive behaviours at school with your child. We have revised our You Can Do It program which will continue for the year - it’s a good idea to use the same terminology so that children are hearing the same thing at home and at school. Connie Confidence, Oscar Organised, Ricky Resilience, Pete Persistence and Gabby Get Along are our puppets that help us make good choices.
Home readers have started this term. These need to be read to your child first and then let them read it to you every night. They won’t be too hard which helps develop fluency - it’s very exciting for the child when they can read a whole book without any help!!
On the 24th May we are off to see Edward the Emu at the Empire Theatre. This is a great experience for children to see a live performance. Ticket and bus cost will be $20 and will be added to your fees.
Please remember library day is Thursday and every child needs a jumper. Our playground can get chilly!
Hope to see you at the School Disco on the 20th May.
Melita, Tabitha and Liz
Year 1
Welcome to week 4 everybody – the first full week for the term.
In English this week, students will write a Literary Retell about the story, ‘There’s a Sea in My Bedroom’. This will require students to be able to describe the character, the setting, and details about the beginning, middle and end. This retell, will be for assessment.
In Science, we have been discussing ‘Our Changing World’, focusing on changes that happen in the sky during the day and night. In their, visual arts lessons with Mrs Simmons, students are busy working on a colourful day and night art painting. We can’t wait to display these in our classroom when they are completed – they will look amazing!
In Hass this term, our focus will be on a Geography unit called ‘Through the Window’. We will be learning about the natural, managed, and constructed features of places, their location, how they change and how they can be cared for.
School Disco & BBQ: Friday 20th May from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A bar will also be operating and plenty of food and refreshments will be available. All children need to be accompanied by an adult for the disco. The P&F would also appreciate any help you can offer in setting up on the Friday afternoon, serving food or packing up after the event. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Empire Excursion: Tuesday 24th May, we will be going to watch Edward the Emu at the Empire. $20 will be charged to your school account.
Thanks for reading and have a wonderful week
Jen and Ange
Year 2
Welcome to Week 4! We hope all of our Mums enjoyed their special day. This week we continue to enjoy exploring the wonderful world of book characters, especially fairy tale characters. It has been interesting comparing the characters portrayed in modern fairy tales to those traditional tales from long ago. We have discovered that the characters these days have more diverse traits than those of old. We are beginning to understand stereotypes and looking at alternative character types.
On the 9th of June in Week 8 we will be celebrating wonderful book characters when we have our dress up day. Start thinking about costumes, keeping in mind that we will be doing some writing about our characters on the following day. It is entirely up to them what character they choose whether it is from a fairy tale or another narrative. It is not meant to be an expensive occasion so feel free to involve your child in assembling the costume from materials that you have at home (which is the fun option) or a bought costume is fine.
In Religion we are learning about the life of Jesus and exploring his early life to compare this to our own lives. In this unit we focus on the clothing, occupations, food and transport of the time. We learn about Jesus’ ministry especially his miracles, teaching and healing. We reflect upon how the OLOL parish carries out Jesus’ mission through our motto Serviam, spreading the word of Jesus and living our lives to be more like Him.
In our Science unit we are exploring pushes and pulls, investigating how forces act on the ground in the air and water. We will also be exploring the effect of the pull of gravity and learning how both air and water can push.
Any queries or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us. Enjoy the lovely cool weather!
Dennielle, Sarah, Aleisha
Year 3
Welcome to Week 4! We really enjoyed our visit to the Empire Theatre to see ‘The 13-Storey Treehouse’ - it was a great show!
This week, we are busy with our NAPLAN testing – well done to all students on their effort and positive attitude as they complete their tests. We have completed the Writing task, Reading and Conventions of Language tests. Tomorrow students will complete the Numeracy test, which is our final one. If students were away for any of the tests, they will have an opportunity to catch up.
This afternoon we attended our first assembly for the term. In Week 6, the Year 3 classes will be presenting the assembly prayer.
Over the next couple of weeks in Religion, we will be looking at various people important to the OLOL Parish and School, both past and present. We will then start to look at the Sacrament of Baptism, the first Sacrament of Initiation. Students will have the opportunity next week to share about their own Baptism – further information is on the homework sheet. In Science, we continue to learn about the Sun – its characteristics and how it affects life here on Earth. Next week in English, we will start to look at poetry and various language devices that can be used with his type of text.
A HASS task has been sent home this week – students are asked to interview somebody they know about how their community has changed over time. If your child is unable to interview somebody, please let their teacher know and we will make other arrangements.
We look forward to seeing many of you at the Welcome Barbecue and disco next Friday night – please see details elsewhere in the newsletter.
Have a great week!
Angela, Sarah, Demi and Janice
Year 4
Welcome to Week 4 … already! It feels like we just got back from holidays! We sincerely hope that all mothers had a lovely day last Sunday! It was lovely to see so many parents and grandparents at the Mother’s Day mass last Wednesday. Mrs Moore did an amazing job in preparing such a special mass – Thank you! Congratulations to the choir members who sang so beautifully at this mass. It was amazing - keep up the good work!
Can you believe that next week is halfway through the Term? What a busy couple of weeks we have had – this is a tough week, being our first full week of teaching days. It has been lovely to see the students in their smart Winter formal uniform and with a few days last week, where we had a taste of Winter – it will be appreciated to have the warmer clothes! Please remember to label all items that may be removed during the day.
Year 4 also enjoyed their time with Year 3 at the Empire Theatre watching the 13th Story Treehouse production. It is always nice to have excursions that get us out of the classroom. Congratulations to 4B who had the unenviable task of being the first class to present at an assembly this year. We wish 4G all the best for their assembly presentation in Week 5. Parents are more than welcome to attend.
Homework is back up and running – please remember to read everyday and complete the Maths Online activities. Athletics rotations will be happening on Fridays for the next couple of weeks as we prepare for our Athletics Carnival, later this Term.
Don’t forget the BBQ and Disco that is on next Friday. More details are provided in this newsletter.
Finally, we welcome Zac and his family to Year 4B at Our Lady of Lourdes and hope that they are enjoying their start to our beautiful school.

Naplan
Welcome to Week 4 and NAPLAN week for our Year 5 students. We have been so impressed with how the students have taken on this challenge, maintaining positive mindsets and displaying the Lourdes Learner mentality. We are almost at the end and look forward to finally moving back into our normal timetable (now public holidays and Naplan are over).
Technology
Navigating technology and Office 365 continue to be an area of focus for our Year 5 students. Moving between Teams, Canvas and OneDrive is a skill, and we are continually practicing making this second nature. As always, we promote the use of Typing Tournament and typing in Word documents at home to support typing skills that are vital for students now, and in the future.
English
Currently in English we have been focusing on persuasive texts. Students are utilising the lawyer paragraph to structure the body of a persuasive text. Students can access resources to revise (or practice) through their Write that Essay login, or the range of resources on Canvas. We have also been examining how persuasive devices enhance our writing, so we have even created actions to help us remember them. I wonder how many they can recall and show you at home? Another focus area has been on different types of sentences. Stories that start with the or a noun every sentence become quite boring for an audience, so students are working towards using adverbs, prepositions and w starts consistently in their writing.
Maths
In Maths, we are finishing off our first cycle on graphing and interpreting data. We will use this knowledge again in Term 3 with budgeting. Next, we move back to place value to compare, order and place decimals and fractions on numbers lines.
Last week, Cody Humphrys and Harry Ryan had the opportunity to participate in the Darling Downs Maths Challenge with Year 6 students. From all accounts it was a wonderful day, and they made our cohort proud.
Congratulations
A big congratulations to Harry Ryan and Mikayla Brasher who participated in an Eisteddfod on Monday. They performed a duologue and took first place. Well done!
We would also like to congratulate the students who have been selected in West Zone, Toowoomba and Darling Downs sporting teams over the year. Congratulations to Nate Smith, Harrison Otto, Michael Denny, Skye Parker, Lucy Sweeney, Riley Walker, Izzy Van Heerden, Blake Attrill, Flynn Burge, Olivia Hancock, Arohamae Fatiaki and Charlotte Burchardt. We are very proud of your commitment and achievements.
Have a great week!

Our recent learning opportunities
Darling Downs Mathematics Challenge: Congratulations to the two Lourdes teams -12 students who travelled to Ursula’s College to compete in the Darling Downs Mathematics Challenge. Our keen mathematicians competed against several other primary schools to solve complex problems in groups and relay formats. The Lourdes A team placed third. The Lourdes B team placed 8th. Congratulations – we are very proud of our Lourdes Learners.
Stem: Thank you Mrs Byrnes for helping us out with the new Microbits – they are like a mini-computer that help students learn to code and use to create projects.
Weekly writing: We are continuing our use of Write that Essay for practising our weekly writing tasks. To see how your child is going, they can access Write that Essay from home and the feedback tool on each piece of writing is invaluable. This differs from last term where handwritten copies were shared at the end of each week. We enjoy celebrating Writers of the Week in our classrooms. This week, we noticed tier two words (the “juicy” or interesting words) create a picture in the reader’s mind.
Upcoming assessment dates
Week 4: Friday 13 May Mathematics Test: multiplication and division of whole numbers and decimals
English: First person
Week 5: Wednesday 18 May: Religion: The Eucharist test (change of date from Friday 20 May)

Art
Welcome back to term 2 Visual Art. This term Visual Arts is being run for Prep-Year 2 and Year 5-6. Year 5 and 6 had their first lesson this week, due to all of the public holidays.
Prep’s have explored different techniques, including finger painting and printing, guided drawing, painting with water colours and using patterns to make a picture. They have completed a picture of an octopus in the ocean, an owl and a caterpillar.
Year1’s have printed Autumn leaves and this week are completing a picture comparing day and night using watercolours.
Year2’s have explored the colour wheel with a fun activity, mixing colours with sponges, to create secondary colours. This week they will explore mixing colours with black and white to create different gradients of a chosen base colour. They will then use this technique to make a layered ice cream picture.
Year 5’s will be exploring printmaking this term, using a variety of techniques. This week they experimented with mono-printing, the simplest of print techniques, where each print is unique. It was very messy but a lot of fun.
Year6’s have begun a self-portrait with a twist. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s portraits, they will create a portrait on a clear plastic sheet with a textured background.

Age-Group Divisions
All students will be issued with a colour-coded name sticker that states their name and year of birth. House marshals will provide students with their sticker when they check in on day 1 at O’Quinn Street. This will greatly assist staff in ensuring all students are where they should be and competing in the right age group. Students compete in their age group not their class year. Please see below if you are unsure what age group your child falls into:

All students in grade 3, who are born in 2014, will participate in the 2013, or 9 years, category for field events – High Jump and Long Jump ONLY. However, as they are not of appropriate age, they will not participate in Discus and Shot Put, nor will they be eligible for age championship points. They will simply be participating in these events to provide them with a valuable experience and to gain participation house points.
Nominating for Events – Grade 3-6 Students
All students will be required to participate in their respective sprint (80 or 100m), 200m, Long Jump, High jump, Shot Put and Discus (Except 8-year-olds). They will be automatically entered into the program for these events.
The 800m is the only event that students will need to nominate for. This information will be collected from the students during their PE classes.
Points Allocation - Individual Age-Championship & House Points
The following points will be awarded to individual athletes and their respective houses according to the overall places that they obtain in each event. Heats will be run for all track events (in the 9-12 year’s category), except for the 800m. One participation point will go towards each students’ individual and house tally following these heats. Subsequently, finals will then take place to award the major individual age championship points and house points, as below. These points will also be awarded to all 9-12 year old’s for field events.
1st Place – 10 points (Blue Ribbon), 2nd Place – 6 points (Red Ribbon), 3rd Place – 4 Points (Green Ribbon), 4th Place – 2 Points (Yellow Ribbon) and 1 Point - 5th place onwards.
80m, 100m & 200m Final Qualifications
All 80m, 100m and 200m events will be timed and the fastest 8-9 runners will proceed to the final. All students will be required to remain at the finish line until all heats in their age group have been run. Finalists will then be named, and they will proceed directly to the track marshals to run their respective final.
High Jump – Fosbury Flop
As per risk assessment guidelines, only students that have obtained a certificate of competence will be allowed to perform the Fosbury Flop. If your child would like to be considered, please contact me on the details below prior to the carnival day.
Medal Presentations
No presentations will be held at the oval. A special assembly will be conducted to present all age champions from 2013-2010 and winning houses on Friday 3rd June at 2:00pm. As with Swimming and cross country, medallions will be presented to age champions in the 9-12 years age category.
Catholic Carnival and West Zone Carnival Team Selection
Following the school Track & Field Carnival, Our Lady of Lourdes will be selecting a team to represent the school at the Catholic Carnival and West Zone Carnival. Only students born 2010-2013 are eligible for team selection. OLOL are limited to the following numbers of entries in both carnivals. Only students born 2010-2012 are eligible to participate in the Shot Put and the Discus at zone level:
80/100 & 200m |
3 students per age group |
800m |
2 students per age group |
Field events |
2 students per age group. |
Students born 2017-2014 are also offered the opportunity to participate in the track events at the Catholic Track & Field Carnival. The top 3 runners in each age group will be selected.
More information regarding the school track & field team will be made available at a later date.
Absence from the school carnival
If your child is unable to attend one or both days of the school Track & Field Carnival, and they would like to be considered for the school team, please contact me on the details below. The school will grant exemptions on the same grounds as Darling Downs School Sport. These grounds for exemption are as follows:
- Medical condition on the day of the carnival & they have a medical certificate.
- Attending another Zone, Toowoomba, Darling Downs, Queensland School Sport or School Sport Australia Championships or equivalent in community sports.
- Bereavement or compassionate reasons
If one or more of these conditions have been met, the school will organize to record times and distances for the affected student, preferably prior to the carnival, as a means of team selection. It is important to note that these times and distances will only be considered for placement in the school team, and not to go towards Age Championship Points. To be awarded age champion the student must attend the school carnival. Please contact me if you require further clarification.
Canteen
There will be a canteen open on day 1. Lollies will not be available for purchase until after 12:00pm. Please remind your children about making sensible purchases. Children will not be allowed to purchase sports drinks or soft drinks.
Helpers/Volunteers
If you are available to help with marshaling, timekeeping, scoring, amongst other jobs, please email me on the address below. It is not possible to run the event successfully without the help of our parents. Thank you in anticipation of your assistance.
