Dear Parents & Carers
Welcome to the first official school newsletter of the year. My apologies for a lengthy Principal’s letter to you all a couple of weeks ago, but there was a lot to share prior to the delayed start to the school year. I’ll try and keep it brief this week!! To assist…if you missed my initial communication please click on this link and have a read to make sure you are fully up to date with school life.
Parenting would have to be one of the most difficult jobs you will ever have to do. It involves sacrifice, endless love and affection, total responsibility and the ability to function on zero sleep and double shot Merlo coffee. The sacrifices are many, but the rewards are beyond compare. It is the little things that matter most, and we must be careful not to let them pass us by due to hectic work commitments or a desire to return the B.C. (before children) days.
For those who don’t know, I am the very proud dad of three daughters and over the years, much to their embarrassment I have shared some of trials and tribulations of being a parent in the newsletter. From first days at school to mortgaging the house to pay for formal dresses.
The thing is, we never stop being parents. Yes, once they leave, life does slow down a little, there is less noise and no more trying to be in three places at once. You also have more time to go and do the things you used to enjoy but the problem is you are now too old to do those things and need to look for other hobbies that don’t require too much physical exertion.
Believe me though, their school days will pass you by in a blink of an eye. Many of you might not think so at the moment, especially when preparing for the school day and battling the traffic and being reminded that homework has been left behind just as you pull into the drop, stop and go zone. Not to mention standing for seasons on end at any one of the frozen wastelands of Toowoomba sporting fields. All I can say is, put another jumper on and enjoy the moments with your kids. Take every opportunity to assist them through the ups and downs of life and celebrate every little success along the way.
My youngest pictured here in Grade One turns 21 this year. I can clearly remember making the ME box with her and taking the photo while she sat in line at school. I’m looking forward to wrapping the ME box and presenting it to her at the 21st. The things about “Me” have changed slightly… they just cost a little bit more!
Whilst parenting is the single biggest influence has on the growth of a child, their teachers and friends along the way play a very integral role in the development of character and independence. A positive partnership between home and school provides a security and a highly influential impact on children. If similar expectations of values, respect and work ethic exist, it provides clear boundaries for children and a roadmap for how to behave and approach life’s ups and downs.
At the 21st, there of course will be plenty of celebration, but also a sense of immense pride of this little girl’s journey and moments of sad reflection and gratitude of all the little things that could have easily passed me by.
Parent Information PowerPoints
In place of our traditional face to face information sessions at the beginning of each year, every year level would have forwarded home a MP4 version of this year’s parent information PowerPoint. Please take a few minutes to view the presentation to gain a greater understanding and insight into class expectations, communication channels and schoolwork to be covered over the course of the year.
School Fees
Term 1’s school fee invoices will be emailed home to all families by the end of this week. Please keep an eye out for this invoice, especially new families, as the email may appear in your junk mail the first time it is sent. Prompt payment of these fees is more than just meeting your financial commitment to the school. Payment of fees is an investment in your child’s education as it assists the school to continually provide quality resources and additional support for your children. We continually strive to keep our fees to a minimum and by no means wish to place a financial burden on families. If at any stage you experience genuine financial difficulty, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss alternative payment plans or concessions.
School Parking & Traffic
All families would have received an email from me last week asking for your help with the efficiency of the stop, drop and go zone. Please take the time to read it if you utilize the stop, drop and go zone. Adherence to our requests, especially during the pick-up times, will greatly assist us and go a long way to reducing traffic congestion.
As with most town schools, parking is at a premium. Parking on the footpath is dangerous and will draw attention to the authorities. For the safety of children and to avoid a fine, please refrain from parking on the footpaths. The safest option is to use the stop, drop and go zone.
West Zone Swimming
Congratulations to all who represented the school at Tuesday’s zone carnival. Special mention to Bowie Ingram, Jack Glasby, Frank Jones, Hayden Lobwein, Isla McGahan, Skye Parker and Olivia Hancock for gaining selection to compete in the Darling Downs Championships on Wednesday 2nd March. Well done to you all.
P&F Association
A big thank you to all who attended Tuesday nights AGM. I am pleased to announce the following members were elected as executive members and look forward to another highly successful partnership in 2022.
President: Ross Haylock
Vice president: Mandy Ryan
Secretary: Trudy Schwerin
Treasurer: Vanessa Pohlner
The association is always keen to welcome new faces so please don’t hesitate to come along to our meetings which are held on the third Tuesday of each month.
Morning Fitness
Commencing next week, we will be offering fitness/cross country training sessions for students in Grades 3-6 on Monday, Wednesday & Friday mornings at 7:30 a.m. Newtown Park. Students can be dropped off at the central rose garden by parents and then accompanied back to school by the supervisory teachers. These sessions are not just for those wishing to compete in cross country or distance events, it is also a great opportunity for all involved to increase their fitness level. For more information, please refer to Mrs. Wigan’s P.E. News section of the newsletter.
Building Project
I have included some progress photos for your interest. Carpets for two of the ground floor classrooms are due to be installed this week, with final fit out of these two rooms to be completed by the end of the month. Depending on TCS compliance, we hope to be able to resettle the Year 6 classes into the new rooms ready for the commencement of Term 2. We have been advised that the project as a whole is approx. 3-4 weeks behind schedule. Considering the amount of wet weather, shortage of materials and COVID affects on the workforce, this delay is understandable. The kids are certainly getting a kick out of watching the construction work and like everyone, can’t wait for the new facilities. A lot more to do, so continued patience and flexibility will help with the day-to-day challenges.
Thanks for reading…..

School Fees and Payment Options
School Fees for Term 1 2022 should be out by the end of this week. Once they have been distributed, a notification will be placed on the OLOL Facebook Memos Page and we request you please check your junk/spam folders to ensure your statement has not ended up there.
Fees can be paid either via BPay or Internet Banking, alternately you can come to the school office and pay via Credit Card, Eftpos or Cash.
Paying by BPay
Payment of school fees via BPay is our preferred method of payment.
If choosing to use BPay, you will find the relevant details located on the bottom right hand of your statement.
The school’s BPay Biller Code is 310417 and your family account reference will be noted underneath (as per example).
When making your payment via BPay you will also have the option to set ongoing recurring payments weekly, fortnightly or monthly if you so choose.
Paying via Internet Banking
Alternately, you may prefer to pay your fees via Internet Banking (EFT Transfer). Should you choose this method, you will find the school’s banking details located on the bottom left of your statement and your family/household reference number located on the top left of your statement.
In the past we have had many families who, when referencing payment of school fees, have used either their surname, first name, maiden name, family trust account details, business name or their childs first name, which can easily cause complications when receipting respective payments as these payments can be inadvertently coded to the incorrect family due to the number of families we now have at OLOL with same names.
Therefore, to streamline the process of payments and to help ensure your payment goes directly to your account (and not that of another family), we would appreciate if you would please use your family account number along with the surname of the person making the payment as your reference.
As with BPay, when making your payment via EFT Transfer you will also have the option to set ongoing recurring payments of weekly, fortnightly or monthly if you so choose.
If you have any questions in relation to payment of your school fees, please contact us on 4591 1200 or email accounts@ololtwb.catholic.edu.au
Prep 2023 Enrolments
Any current families who have siblings looking to enter Prep in 2023 (children born 01 July 2017 to 30 June 2018), would you please complete and submit your enrolment form as soon as possible. This will greatly assist us with our number allocations of new families looking at joining our school family and community.
Enrolment forms can now be found under the 'For Parents' tab on our website Our Lady of Lourdes Primary (ololtwb.catholic.edu.au)
If you have trouble accessing this form, please see us at the office and we can provide you with a hard copy.
Thank-you.

The Admin Team
Welcome to the first Teaching & Learning newsletter article for 2022. It is fabulous to see all students back at school and into the swing of learning in classrooms again.
You may know that for a few years our school was part of the Lighthouse Numeracy project, an action research initiative of the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office. Teachers were, and still are, engaged in supporting exemplary learning in Numeracy by maximizing impact through three main areas:
- Pedagogical Practices (eg. Number Talks, Thinking Routines, and Investigations)
- Curriculum Concepts (eg. Planning METS tasks {STEM with a Maths focus} and gathering evidence of learning with learning journals)
- Mathematical Mindsets (eg. Promoting the fact that everyone has a Maths brain, mistakes help learning, and the Learning Pit is a great visual to remind us that we can persist when challenged)
As we delve deeper into a new project, specifically the Writing Improvement Strategy, we remain focused on sustaining our Numeracy project learnings by using the same three areas to hone our improvement in writing. The pedagogical practices, curriculum concepts and mindsets to enable effective writers will be our new focus and we hope you notice enthused writers at home.
Parent tips for supporting Writing Mindsets:
Parents and guardians have incredible opportunities to shape their children’s education and their writing mindsets. Please see some tips for supporting your child’s writing.
Praise children for their effort! When children know that learning and hard work make them achieve at their highest levels, their achievement takes off.
- Always acknowledge mistakes are an important part of learning. Recent research has shown that our brains grow the most when we make mistakes. We want students to be challenged and make mistakes in order to learn new things. But many children hate to make mistakes. It is important both to celebrate challenge and tell children their brain is growing when they make mistakes, both in Maths and when reading and writing.
- Practice handwriting, speaking in full sentences and writing different sentence types that do not always start with the subject, for example, an adverb start, Remarkably, Mr Golightly was lost for words and was curiously silent.
- Encourage your child to re-read their writing aloud and use the sentence high five to check each sentence is written correctly (refer to posters below). A sentence must:
- Start with a capital letter
- Include a subject (a noun or pronoun)- who or what is the sentence about?
- Include a verb – what is the subject doing?
- End with a punctuation mark (e.g. a full stop or question mark for a question)
- Make sense

Family Writing Challenge!
To help support each other in our Writing Improvement Strategy journey, our school has a team of volunteer teachers who will join Chris and myself in leading writing improvement. Mrs Emily McKay, Mr Garry Birch, Miss Jess Packer, Mrs Shauna Coren and Mrs Dennielle Taylor will be involved in the team and have suggested we have a family writing challenge!
This week, we challenge families to write a 6-sentence story about our new school building!
A sample scaffold could be:
- The first sentence begins with a sizzling start about the main character or subject.
- The second sentence describes the character or subject.
- The third sentence adds more details about the character or subject.
- The fourth sentence describes a problem.
- The fifth sentence explains how the character felt or develops the problem further.
- The final sentence details how the problem was solved.
Go ahead, give it a go together. Please send stories to me and these will be displayed at our front office.
Have a great week.

Prep
Wow - what a great start we’ve had to 2022!
The children look great in their school uniform and so keen to become Lourdes Learners.
Lots of information has been sent home - please chat to us if you are unsure of anything. Our school has an open door policy so please reach out if we can assist in any way.
It’s a very exciting and important first step in your child’s educational journey and we feel privileged to be a part of the journey.
Establishing routines are very important and will enable your child to know what’s happening. Talk to your child about what’s happening at school, who did they play with, what activities did they do/enjoy, what did they learn today ?
A big welcome to Prep and we look forward to working together.
Cheers,
Melita, Tab and Liz
Year 1
Welcome to the 2022 school year! We hope it will be an enjoyable one for everybody.
In Maths this week, we are learning about teen numbers. Students will learn how to partition numbers using place value. Last week, students enjoyed participating in math rotations. These will occur every week to assist with the learning of each concept taught.
Last week, students wrote a literary retell about Possum Magic – including information on the beginning, middle and end. This week in English, we will move onto informative texts about Possums and will learn how to write an information text.
Students are enjoying our Literacy Daily 4 Rotations. Students from 1B & 1M have been placed into mixed groupings and go between our classrooms. Rotations have either a writing, reading, phonics or listening component.
Homework commenced this week. Please contact your classroom teacher if you’re not sure what it entails.
Jen and Ange
Year 2
After an unusual start to the year, we have settled back into normal school life beautifully, and fingers crossed it will be smooth sailing from now on! It has been lovely meeting our new Year 2s and getting to know them. We have launched into our school work and routines with great enthusiasm and our learning is well underway. Building upon our understanding of what makes a great Lourdes Learner is helping set the tone for a year of learning and growth.
In Maths we are working on our addition strategies such as friendly jumps and adding ten. We are exploring numbers up to 200, learning about number sequences and counting patterns. In English we are focusing on using different types of nouns, gaining understanding about the difference between common nouns and proper nouns. This year, Daily Writes are an integral part of our routine, as we work towards improving our writing, setting goals based on self-evaluation and feedback from our peers and teachers. Improving editing skills will be a focus as we strive to bump up our writing.
We have enjoyed the commencement of our specialist Art, P.E, Music lessons and STEM lessons which will occur each week.
Homework is underway and students know what is expected. Please ensure that regular reading is occurring and that reading logs are filled in each week.
Our Parent Information Powerpoint has been emailed. Please contact us if you have any questions or queries. Thanks to your wonderful support we have had a smooth start to the year.
Dennielle, Sarah and Aleisha
Year 3
Welcome back – what a great start we had together last week! It has been wonderful to see so many students ready to learn each day and we have been impressed with the way everybody has settled back in. We give a special welcome to Miss Demi Schmidt who is teaching 3S and to Leanne, Archer, William and Jacob in 3GM and Sabine in 3S, who have joined us from other schools.
A lot of information has been sent home via homework sheets and our Parent Information PowerPoint – please let your child’s teacher know if you did not receive these or if you have any other questions. A reminder that sports uniform is to be worn on Mondays and Fridays and library borrowing days are Tuesday (3S), Wednesday (3G) and Thursday (3GM).
Just a reminder to tell your children which “pick up” time they are following. Some children are unsure whether they are being picked up at 2:40 pm or 3 pm. Also, please have your family name on your sun visor or dashboard when you arrive at “Stop Drop and Go” - it makes it so much easier for the teachers on duty to call for your child/children.
This term, we are looking at persuasive texts – what it means to persuade and the language we use to persuade. In Science, we are exploring the three states of matter – solids, liquids and gases – and experimenting with changing materials from one state to another. In HASS, we are learning about various celebrations and commemorations observed in Australia and around the world. This week in Maths, we are exploring place value.
Have a great week ?
Ange, Demi, Sarah and Janice
Year 4
Finally, we have had the opportunity to welcome all students back to Year 4. It has been lovely to see so many students eager to get into their work. All Year 4 teachers have been impressed with their wonderful start to the year.
On Monday, all students were sent home with an ‘interview form’ that they need to complete for Health. Students will be required to interview family members and bring the form back by this Friday, please. We hope that everyone received the Parent Information Session Powerpoint that was emailed out last Thursday – if you didn’t please don’t hesitate to contact your class teacher.
Yesterday, Mia was our only Year 4 student to represent Our Lady of Lourdes at the West Zone Swimming Carnival. We are very proud of you Mia! Several other students were hoping to represent our school at the Catholic Swimming Carnival last week, but unfortunately it was canceled.
Last week Mrs Moore emailed out a letter from the Parish regarding Sacraments for this year. If you child is interested in making their First Eucharist and Confirmation sacraments, please follow up on that email.
Our lessons this Term include looking at place value in Mathematics, learning how to look up Bible scripture references in Religion, investigating soil and rocks in Science, studying about other countries in Geography and lots of writing and reading of Rowan of Rin, in English. What a busy start to the year!
Finally, just a reminder that homework is due on Fridays and 4B and 4G have borrowing time in the Library on Wednesdays and 4L are on Fridays.
Suzanne, Toni and Garry
Year 5
Welcome to 2022! Firstly, we welcome some new faces to our OLOL family. We are very excited to have new students including Jorja, Kaylee, Sophie, Abigail, Luca, Eva, ‘Alani and Theo. We are sure it goes without saying, but please ensure you give them and their families a big OLOL welcome.
We are looking forward to a positive year with your children. We have spent our first week establishing our Year 5 team expectations, because in Year 5 we are a team and will be engaging with students from across the cohort; working together towards success. Over the course of the year each teacher will get to know every child, and every child will be taught by each of the three teachers for a variety of different subjects. During our cohort meetings we have spent lots of time discussing how we can be Lourdes Learners, working through the Learning Pit and how our learning will look, especially with flexible learning and reflective practise. If you have any queries, please come and see us.
Communication
Six emails have been sent to parents via the school messaging system, via the email addresses provided to the school. These were emailed to both parents. If you did not receive these emails please contact the office with your updated details ASAP, as all information is forwarded home via email.
Our email details are:
Emily McKay - emily.mckay@twb.catholic.edu.au
Jessica Packer - jessica.packer@twb.catholic.edu.au
Timothy Franzmann - timothy.franzmann@twb.catholic.edu.au
ICAS
Congratulations to our ICAS award recipients. Cody Humphrys took our top honours in Queensland receiving the Gold Medal for ICAS Digital Technologies. Other students received their certificates in our class cohort meeting last Thursday with Ms Murray and Mr Golightly presenting. Please see images below.
Homework
Homework has started. Emails have been sent home already outlining homework and our Parent Information Session sent last Thursday, further outlines expectations. Please encourage your child to do a little each night. Reading is also an expectation, we encourage students to be reading for 20mins, 5 times per week. A little hint for the reading-writing connection – if you read quality, you will write quality.
Library
Mrs Leathardt has assisted students in creating reading goals during Library time. Our students will be going to Library on a Tuesday. The Library policy is “No Bag No Borrow”! Students may use their Lourdes satchel. All students must borrow each week! If your child would like to borrow from senior fiction, parents will need to complete the permission form https://forms.office.com/r/H6rribVKUW. Form is Due 23rd February.
Typing Skills
Typing and computer literacy will also be a vital skill we will be working on this year. Typing is an essential life-long skill that students must develop in order be successful in the remainder of their schooling. We highly encourage you to support this development at home. Students all have access to Typing Tournament so please get them typing, using correct finger placement (and using two hands).

Teaching and Learning
Students will have brought home term planners and assessment planners to support executive functioning skills of time management, planning and organisation. Most students have reported that these have been set up in study spaces at home. Our first assessment is an introductory letter due this Friday 18th February.
On a Friday, students will bring home weekly samples. This is an opportunity to gain feedback on areas that students have experienced success with and areas for further development. We ask that parents sign these samples and are returned to school on a Monday.
It is important for students to keep up with work when away from school, especially over prolonged periods such as being a close contact or when other commitments require some time away from school. When absent, work can still be accessed. This will be via Teams for Science, Art, shared reading, and Health. Check Files on Teams for this. HaSS (History and Social Science), Maths, explicit reading skills and independent reading skills can be accessed via OneNote. Students know how to log onto and access these learning platforms.
Students have dived straight into learning with enthusiasm.
HaSS: ‘We have been learning about Federation. Some important decisions were made way back in 1901 that helped our nation to be what it is today’ – Zane Ozog
Maths: ‘We have investigated properties of square and triangular numbers’ – Will Schwerin
Science: ‘Did you know that know tectonic plates can move in four separate ways? New Zealand is a hotspot for earthquakes’ – Jono Skuse
English: ‘I have enjoyed daily writes because they help us with skills to make our writing interesting. Mr Lee inspired our first two pieces of writing when he brought in a rainmaker stick and an indigenous shield.’ – Ellie Bennett
Senior Fiction Permission
Please find link from Mrs Leathart for permission to read Senior Fiction texts. Responses are due February 23rd.

Welcome to 2022 and another busy year full of teaching and learning!
Learning Support is still in The Hive (between the two Prep classes) while the building work is on-going. Mrs Kehoe and Mrs Jessen job share with Mrs Kehoe working Mondays, Tuesdays and every second Wednesday (Weeks 1,3,5,7,9 of each term) and Mrs Jessen working Wednesdays, Thursdays and every second Friday (also Weeks 1,3,5,7,9 of each term).
Mrs Kehoe and Mrs Jessen have been meeting with class teachers to analyse class data and discuss the needs of the students within the classes. These types of meetings will happen throughout the year. If required, further assessments are undertaken to pinpoint students’ strengths and weaknesses and areas for intervention.
The model for Learning Support at OLOL is The Response to Intervention Model. This is a three-tiered model for learning and intervention. Mrs Kehoe and Mrs Jessen provide support across all three tiers – within the classroom, small groups and individuals.
Tier 1 : Classroom Support
The majority of students (approx. 80%) succeed in the regular classroom with assistance from the class teacher and school officer. Class teachers use data (assessment results) to monitor student progress and make adjustments according to these results. Teachers record modifications and adjustments in their planning documents (Planning for Personalised Learning).
Tier 2: Small Group Support
There will be a small percentage of students (approx. 15%) who require additional support to achieve at the expected level. Mrs Kehoe and Mrs Jessen work alongside teachers and parents to identify these students and to provide intensive, short-term, targeted support. This support is in addition to classroom support provided by the class teacher and school officer.
Tier 3: Individual Support
A very small number of students (approx. 5%) require a high degree of support and a team approach including specialists, such as, speech pathologists, psychologists, occupational therapists and other personnel. These students often require an individual program and may be on a Modified Curriculum Plan (CMP).
Please refer to the Response to Intervention Model reproduced below.
Students can move between the three tiers according to their progress, consequently, progress needs to be closely monitored.
This model is not only relevant to academic tasks (literacy and numeracy). It is equally applicable to behaviour, social skills, speech and occupational therapy and counselling services.
Please let us know if you have any queries or concerns.
Until next time….

Representative Sport—Toowoomba & Darling Downs Teams
Throughout the course of the year Toowoomba Primary School Sport and Darling Downs School Sport offer trials to eligible students for a variety of team and individual sports. To be eligible for selection, students need to be born in 2012, 2011 or 2010. Strict nomination requirements apply, and it is at the sole discretion of the school to decide whether to nominate individual students.

Library Procedure Reminders
- Library Bags are required for Weekly Borrowing. No bag = No Borrow.
- Hand sanitising is required on entry to the Library space. If your child is unable to sanitise because of skin or other conditions they will be directed to wash their hands with soap and water on the way to the Library.
- If your child wishes to extend a loan please send it in their Library bag. They can hold onto the item/s until borrowing time and we will do the extension then.
- Overdue letters will be sent out throughout the year. It is important to keep on top of outstanding loans to avoid fees. Overdue books will be charged to families at replacement cost.
- Damaged items happen from time to time. Please do not try to repair items yourself. Please drop items back to us and we will fix them if possible. If an item cannot be repaired the borrower is responsible and we have a range of replacement options. Damages are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Senior Fiction Permission
The aim of the library is to build collections that encourage, students to think critically. Therefore, the importance of free access to the widest possible range of resources, conveying the greatest number of human ideas and experiences, is important in order to meet the information needs of every student. Having said this though, we recognise and value the importance of a parent’s right to monitor their child’s reading.
There are a number of titles in the library that are marked ‘Senior Fiction’ and are available for students in Years 5 and 6 to borrow. These books are for the older reader and include adolescent themes such as: mental illness, loss, terminal illness, growing up/sexuality, mature themes (i.e. prejudice and language choices), and so forth. As these books are restricted to Year 5s and 6s, please confirm permission by filling in the form below and returning it to school by Wednesday February 23. A record of your response will be kept on the library database. If there is no response by February 23 we will assume that your child/ren DO NOT have permission to borrow from this collection. Please fill in this form for each child in Year 5 or 6.
Should you wish for any further information please direct questions to Mrs Leathart (Danielle.Leathart@twb.catholic.edu.au).

Ebony Rosier
Mrs Sarah Kelly and I will be offering gardening classes again this year, for all of our budding young gardeners. They will be held during the second half of lunch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We really look forward to teaching the kids how to propagate from cuttings this term, as well as continuing to care for their veggie gardens. Their veggies have certainly flourished over the Christmas break, and are ready for picking
Thank you to whoever has donated pots already this year, we very much appreciate it.
